the bamboobies story

Bamboobies were born out of necessity - 'the mother of invention!'

After breastfeeding for a few months, I was still leaking sometimes...  I even leaked through the thick washable cotton pads.  I was tired of looking like I had round targets on my chest where the pads showed through my shirt.  Disposables also showed wrinkles and just created too much trash. And disposables get very expensive!

So one day I decided, just because it was handy, to stuff a washable diaper wipe into my bra - it felt great, but it looked funny and was far from perfect.  It was made of organic bamboo velour so it was deliciously soft and wicked and absorbed like a great pad should.  I'd never felt anything so soft!

A year into product development and prototyping with different fabrics and designs, we have settled on a couple of unique breast pad designs that mothers love.

the 'overnight' bamboobies story

The idea for the "Overnights" came from our users: one new mother asked for a pad that was extra-large, wouldn't slip around in her tank-top, and was ultra soft and absorbent for the early days and nights of nursing.

Those first 6-9 weeks are tough if you are engorged - especially at night. The last thing you want is to be woken up by leaking milk while your baby sleeps soundly!  Overnights have become a new mother essential.

Overnights are, as one mother says, "like a cashmere sweater for my boobies - perfect for the first few months of nursing."

the cute little nursing cover story

I was in an airport restaurant with my 2-month old son having trouble with the latch and the last thing I needed was onlookers...  My husband was concerned when I bared almost-all to make it happen and I felt uncomfortable too! But I didn't feel I should need to hide in the ladies room or wear a silly-looking apron to feed my son.

I looked but couldn't find a stylish answer to my problem so I began wearing a shawl - sometimes to nurse and sometimes because it was cute.  I worked with a couture designer friend to develop a cover that I could feel good about wearing. The Cute LIttle Nursing Cover was born of a need for fashion + discretion and is the solution for women who want to nurse their baby privately and stylishly.

Our story

Armed with a business degree, an entrepreneurial background and exciting products and mission, I've taken off running... I've started other businesses, but I've never felt so committed and excited.

Nursing my children for the last 4+ years has enabled me to develop great products -- and has kept me grounded.  I didn't have an easy time breastfeeding in the beginning and I hope to help others with the new challenges of motherhood as others have helped me.

Hearing that Bamboobies helped a new mother's cracked nipple heal -- that a woman felt she could continue to nurse because of our products makes my day!

I haven't done it alone:

My thanks goes out to all the new-mom testers, our seamstresses, our sales and marketing team, our first retailers, our lactation consultants, our fellow mom-preneur pals and my ever-supportive husband and family.

Designing the perfect bamboobies and nursing wraps with fun, hip marketing has been challenging, but we've finally done it!
